Blowholes

The blowholes of the Aran Islands, especially those on Inis Mór, are dramatic natural features that showcase the raw power of the Atlantic Ocean. One of the most striking is known as “Poll na bPéist” (the Wormhole), a perfectly rectangular sea pool carved by nature into the limestone cliffs near Dún Aonghasa. While it appears manmade, this natural blowhole connects directly to the sea, and during high tide or stormy weather, powerful waves can surge through it, creating an awe-inspiring display of force.Other blowholes and sea caves along the island’s rugged coast can be spotted on more remote hikes. These geological wonders offer a unique glimpse into the island’s wild side and are a must-see for adventurous hikers and photographers alike. Just be cautious—many are located near steep cliffs and should be approached with care, especially during rough weather.

St. Bennan's Church

St. Bennan's Church (Teampall Bheanáin) is one of the smallest and oldest churches in Ireland, perched high on a hill overlooking Inis Mór. Dedicated to St. Benen, a disciple of St. Patrick, this tiny stone chapel dates back to the 11th century and is revered as a sacred and serene spot on the island. The hike to St. Benen’s Church is short but rewarding, with a steep ascent that takes around 30 to 45 minutes round trip. The terrain includes grassy slopes and rocky paths, leading you to a peaceful summit with panoramic views of the island and the Atlantic Ocean. Despite its size, the church carries deep spiritual significance and offers a perfect place for reflection and quiet admiration of Inis Mór’s ancient heritage.Ideal for history lovers and those seeking a tranquil walk off the beaten path, this hike connects nature, faith, and time in a uniquely intimate way.
